A proud tradition on the shores of Lake Huron for over four decades.
From Humble Beginnings
What began as a modest local event has grown into one of Ontario’s premier and oldest salmon derbies. Each summer, anglers from across the province and beyond gather in Saugeen Shores and surrounding waters to take part in ten days of friendly competition, camaraderie, and unforgettable fishing experiences.

A Rich Fishing Heritage
The derby is deeply rooted in the rich fishing heritage of the Lake Huron shoreline. The introduction and successful management of Chinook salmon helped shape the recreational fishery in this region, creating opportunities that generations of anglers have come to enjoy. The Chantry Chinook Classic has played a role in celebrating and sustaining that legacy, while promoting responsible fishing practices and respect for the resource.
Supporting the Local Economy
The derby also supports local economies, bringing in immense tourism dollars to the region in terms of spending at gas stations, hotels/motels, cottage rentals, marinas, local restaurants, and independent businesses throughout the counties.

Supporting the Fishery
A key part of that commitment is the work of the Lake Huron Fishing Club, which operates two hatcheries that support the local fishery. The original hatchery in Port Elgin raises Chinook salmon from egg to smolt and also contributes to raising rainbow trout. In Kincardine, the club operates a dedicated trout hatchery, where rainbow trout are raised from eggs collected each spring from the Saugeen River at Denny’s Dam, along with brown trout raised in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources. These efforts help sustain healthy fish populations and ensure the future of the sport for generations to come.
Giving Back
Over the years, the event has remained committed to giving back. Proceeds from the derby support the efforts of the Lake Huron Fishing Club, including conservation work, hatchery operations, youth engagement, and community initiatives that help protect and enhance the fishery.
A Tradition That Continues
Today, the Chantry Chinook Classic continues to honour its roots while evolving with the times; welcoming seasoned competitors and first-time anglers alike. Whether you’re chasing a prize-winning catch or simply enjoying time on the water, the derby is about more than fishing: it’s about community, tradition, and a shared passion for Lake Huron.
